About the Malaysia Aikido Association (MAA)

The Malaysia Aikido Association (MAA) (Persatuan Aikido Malaysia) is the premier national martial arts organization dedicated to traditional Aikikai Aikido in Malaysia. Spanning over four decades, MAA serves as the definitive bridge connecting local practitioners to the global Aikido community.

Our History and Lineage

  • Founding & Growth (1975–1994): Aikikai Aikido training began in 1975 at YMCA Kuala Lumpur under Michael Tham Sensei. Following his 1982 retirement, the expansion of these activities was driven by the dedicated leadership of George Lo Sensei and CS Tee Sensei. To unify practitioners, MAA was formally registered in 1994.
  • Establishing Independence (1998): In May 1998, senior instructors parted ways with the YMCA KL dojo to chart an independent path. By June, the Ikkyo Aikido Centre was founded as the official headquarters for MAA’s national administration and training.
  • The Legacy of Sugano Shihan (1999): In 1999, MAA was deeply honored to welcome Seiichi Sugano Shihan (8th Dan, uchi-deshi to the founder O-Sensei) as our Master Instructor. The profound wisdom and global vision of the late master permanently shaped the spirit and technical direction of MAA.

Official Recognition & Affiliations

MAA holds prestigious credentials that solidify its status as a highly respected national sports body:

  • Aikikai Hombu Dojo (2002): Officially recognized by the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, authorizing MAA to conduct internationally recognized Kyu and Dan gradings.
  • National Credentials: Proudly accepted as an Associate Member of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and recognized as a National Sport Association under the National Sports Council (NSC).
  • Sports Commission (2009): Formally registered under the Sports Commission of Malaysia in full compliance with the Sports Development Act 1997.

MAA Today

Today, MAA oversees a vibrant national network of affiliated dojos across multiple states, upholding the highest standards of safety, technical excellence, and traditional etiquette. Guided by the spirit of Budo, we remain committed to fostering harmony, discipline, and personal growth for practitioners of all levels across Malaysia.
